The Instrumental Music program at Richmond Hill State School aims at not only developing the student’s musical skills, but endeavours to provide experiences for the holistic development of a student’s education. All Instrumental Music students are given lessons in small groups, which are based on the student’s ability. Lessons are held on Thursdays (Woodwind and Brass) and Fridays (Percussion) every week on a rotating basis, thus students never miss the same class in a row. Richmond Hill has two bands, a senior band- the Berlioz Band rehearsing at 7.50am and a beginner band - the Grieg Band, which begin rehearsals in Term 3 during the school day. Students must show dedication to their home practice before an invitation is given to join senior band. In 2016, students participated in an array of workshops including the Beginner Music Workshop (BMW) and Advanced Music Workshop (AMW), as well as at The Charters Towers Festival of Bands (FOB), which continues to grow in popularity. Many students successfully completed their AMEB practical and theoretical exam, which is a testament to their hard work.
Senior students combine together to form the Charters Towers Combined Schools Band and travel to Townsville to compete against other state schools in the North Queensland FANFARE competition.
